Old Business

Minutes

The minutes from the March 28th meeting were posted on the website and distributed to the present members.  No corrections were made.  Motion to accept by Liz and seconded by Bo.  Minutes accepted.

Treasurer’s Report

The treasurer’s report was not available.  Beverly will obtain the report from Walt this week and make an addendum to the minutes.

Other Business

Present members are still fine with meeting at Nelson Co. EMS.  Please note the exception – the September meeting will be at the KY EMS Conference and Expo.  Everyone will meet on Tuesday September 27th at 7 p.m. (CDT).  All committees will meet at 6 p.m. and give their individual reports at the general membership meeting.

Election of officers (from the Board of Directors) was tabled again.  Not all the representatives were present.

Discussed fund raising ideas, particularly selling t-shirts and maybe sweatshirts.  Money raised would be used for any speaker per diem or any costs incurred for classes (such as the air medical survival day training).  Lisa Nicholls (LifeNet) will bring a preliminary shirt design to the next meeting.  Lisa will also look into different vendors, costs, turn around time, etc.  Each service will need to send a picture of one of their aircraft to Lisa (e-mail address: lnicholls@airmethods.com).  Beverly will send Lisa the KY AAMS logo.  We will also need to determine the sale prices of the shirts.

Discussed a survival training day for all services.  May have to have the same class on two different days so everyone can attend.  We would like the training to take place as central as possible.  If you have an idea of where we can hold this training, please contact Bo or Liz.  Also, if you have experience teaching survival training, again, please contact Bo or Liz.  Possible months for this training are late October or next spring.  This training is for everyone.  Political and hidden agenda’s will not be allowed.

New Business

Ideas for the KY EMS Conference

Jason will develop a flyer that will be inserted in the conference attendee’s registration packets.  The flyer will have KY AAMS information and L/Z safety information.  A preliminary design will be presented at the next meeting.

Possibly have a booth or table to give out information and sell t-shirts (may sweatshirts too).  Each service will need to participate with staffing the booth.  We will need to have multiple colors represented at the table during Expo hours.  The Expo will open Wednesday afternoon and run all day Thursday and until noon Friday.  Flyers will also be available at each services displays.  Also discussed having a door prize sign up at the table.  Maybe give away a shirt or possibly have each service donate an item for a basket.  Beverly will try and locate the KY AAMS banner.

Linda will be presenting the L/Z safety lecture.  An aircraft picture from each service is still needed for Lyn’s presentation.  Send pictures to linda-minton@statcare.org.  A discussion followed about KY AAMS presenting a follow up lecture on the legal aspects and dangers of helicopter shopping and requesting multiple aircraft to a scene or hospital without the other service’s knowledge.  Maybe involve a pilot and an attorney (contact Jerry McGraw) with this lecture.  Beverly will contact the EMS conference education coordinator to see if we can get a slot immediately following Lyn’s lecture.  Bo has expressed an interest in this particular lecture.  (Addendum:  KY AAMS is slated for these two lectures on Wednesday afternoon.)

KY AAMS Flyer

Jason suggested we post the L/Z safety guidelines on the website.  Perhaps place it in a pdf file so folks can copy it for information and training.  Beverly will contact the web master to see what this would entail and if there would be an additional cost for this item.

It was also suggested to examine a banner ad on the EMS Connection.  Beverly will ask John Hultgren for prices and possible formats.

Education and Governmental Affairs Committees

There was a discussion concerning the formation of the education and governmental affairs committees.  Beverly suggested the education committee be formed very soon so that this group can start working on the EMS Conference, public education and the survival training.  The education committee can also work with the safety committee on several projects.

Governmental affairs should be formed late this summer or early fall so this committee can get ideas / concerns, etc. formed prior to the next legislative session.  To the present members knowledge, no one has been appointed to fill John Blumenstock’s KBEMS position.

If you are interested in participating in one of these committees, please let your AAMS representative know.  Attending the next KY AAMS meeting would be most helpful.  Remember there is no set limit on the number of people that can serve on a committee.  Each committee can meet when and where they want.  It is required that committee’s report their activities at the scheduled general membership meetings.

Safety Committee

The safety committee met prior to the general membership meeting this evening.  Please read the posted May 16th minutes.  Significant information was discussed.  Beverly noted that if crews experience any problems at the U of L helipad (with Yellow EMS, security or the ER tech’s), please contact immediately STATCARE communications.  STATCARE will then address / re train the appropriate party.

Safety In-Service

Dwight Lawrence, STATCARE pilot and safety officer, gave the safety presentation.  The topic tonight concerned recent national issues about tail rotor safety at scenes and cockpit resources management.  At a scene, either a crewmember guards the tail or a first responder is assigned to that duty.  During L/Z training, each service needs to address this issue and train the first responders with tail rotor (and aircraft safety) guard duty.  Discussion about who is usually assigned tail rotor guarding and problems that have been observed by different programs.

Cockpit resource management is a team effort.  We need to look out for one another.  If someone is not feeling well, someone could have or should have said something to stop the individual from flying.  Dwight gave the acronym IMSAFE to help identify a problem.  I = Illness; M = Medication; S = Stress; A = Alcohol; F = Fatigue and

E = Emotions.  Crews are strongly encouraged to always look outside the cockpit when possible to always look out “for the other guy.”  Dwight also emphasized a briefing at the start of each shift and debriefings after each flight (especially scenes).

No other business or discussion.

Next meeting will be on July 18, 2005 at Nelson County EMS.

Motion to adjourn by Beverly.  So moved by Jason and seconded by Bo.

Meeting adjourned at 2030.

Respectively submitted,

Beverly Ford

Interim Secretary
