for the meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
NAACS Course Contribution
A letter was received thanking KyAAMS for our $200 contribution to the
National Association of Air Medical Communications Specialist course held
July 14th and 15th 2000 in Louisville, Kentucky. This contribution helped to
lower the course tuition for the participants. The course was attended by 15
people from 8 different air medical programs from as far away as New Mexico.
KyAAMS Logo
All aircraft artwork from KyAAMS programs have been received. Jodie is
waiting to get the original screen printing design of the current KyAAMS
logo so that it may be modified with the new aircraft. This will be much
more cost effective. The design should be finished soon.
Air Medical Memorial Wings
KyAAMS Air Medical Memorial Wings have obtained national recognition. They
will be advertised in the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA)
"Across the Board" newsletter and sold for $8 each. $7 for each covers the
costs for manufacturing and shipping. $1 each will go to the ASTNA Safety /
Bereavement Fund. KyAAMS has donated over $1200 to this fund as a result of
the sale of the Memorial Wings. ASTNA will ask other associations (Nat.Flight
Paramedic Assoc, Nat. Flight Physicians Assoc, etc) to contribute to this fund.
ASTNA recently changed its bylaws which included establishment of a
Bereavement Fund. In the event of a fatal air medical accident, a donation
of up to $200 will be made to each crew members' family or designated
charity. The "crew member" includes pilot, flight nurse, flight paramedic, etc.
In addition to being in the "Across the Board" newsletter, KyAAMS Memorial
Wings will be advertised on the ASTNA web site and a banner will be made to
display at conferences. KyAAMS will continue to process the orders for the
Memorial Wings and retain full control of management of the sales.
NEW BUSINESS
UK Memorial Service
The UK Memorial Service held on June 14th was attended by KyAAMS president
Jodie Hignite.
KyAAMS Meetings
KyAAMS has traditionally met every other month on the third Monday of the
month. Meeting sites have rotated between the Louisville area and the
Lexington area with the exception of one meeting each year held in
conjunction with the KY EMS Conference and Expo. Corporate member programs
host the meetings.
The last 2 meetings were cancelled due to lack of a quorum. According to
the bylaws, a quorum is reached when 10% of the voting membership is present
with at least 2 member programs represented. Our current membership is 53 so
that is only 5 people.
The need for and frequency of KyAAMS meetings was discussed by those
present. It was noted that to be recognized as an association by the state,
the association must meet at least twice a year. The KyAAMS bylaws only
state that "The members shall meet on a regular basis ." and that the KyAAMS
officers may determine when meetings are held.
The consensus of those present favored scheduling quarterly meetings with
special meetings called as needed. Ongoing communication among the
membership, primarily via email, was noted as an essential element. Also
noted was the importance of maintaining a visibly active association in the
light of the newly forming EMS board. KyAAMS needs to be strong to represent
our industry's interests.
Much has been accomplished by KyAAMS. The state air medical regulations were
written largely with direct input from KyAAMS. Legislative issues related
to our industry continue to be monitored and addressed by KyAAMS as needed.
Elizabethtown was suggested as a regular meeting place because of it's
central location within the state. Those present agreed it would be wise to
continue to hold one of the meetings in conjunction with the state EMS
conference and expo. The conference will again be in Owensboro, KY
September 10-16, 2001.
The meeting sites for the year 2000 have already been established. These
suggestions will be considered by the KyAAMS officers when scheduling future
meetings.
Incorporation
The issue of incorporation of the KyAAMS Chapter was raised. Legally an
association should not collect dues or advertise an official address unless
it is incorporated by the state. Also, an association would not be
considered to be "in good standing" with the state unless it is
incorporated. Bobby Thacker explained that it is a relatively simple and
inexpensive process to have the Chapter incorporated. Bobby agreed to
initiate the process for KyAAMS.
Adjournment
There being no further business, Rick McKinstry adjourned the meeting at
8:27 p.m.
NEXT MEETING: November 20, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. E.D.T.
Hosted by CareFlight - Lexington, KY.
The meeting will be held at the Kentucky Inn which is across the street from
St. Joseph's hospital on the corner of Waller Avenue and Harrodsburg Street
